Farranfore - Killarney

1st Day:

Munich Airport / Flight

Flugfertiges FahrradEarly in the morning, we put our bikes onto the top of the car and drove to Munich airport. We used one of the many facilities for long-term parking near the airport. But here we encountered the first problem: trying to find a way by bike from the car park to the terminal. This is not as easy as it seems since you are not allowed to ride a bike on the motorway! But a very friendly taxi driver explained and helped us to get to the check-in on time. Having arrived there, we wrapped our bikes in styrofoam for the flight and left them (for 50.- Deutschmarks more) with the rest of our luggage to be checked in.
The flight from Munich to Kerry Airport is short and interesting when the sky is clear. The Channel was full of ships and ferries and we could admire Tower Bridge from above when we flew over London. The airport of Kerry is rather small and seems more like a cattle field with a road right through it. But due to this lack of size and tourist numbers we went through customs in no time and received our luggage and bicycles without any delay.
Arrival / Tour to Killarney / Campground
We had landed at 5 pm local time (1 hr behind Germany) and unwrapped our bikes. Trying to find a garage with an intact pump for our tyres was the next obstacle in our way. The car hire was very small and their only pump out of order. Hence we filled the tyres with our own hand pump and were finally on the road.

Of course, we were a bit wobbly on the bikes at first, not being used to the weight (approx. 10-15 kg) and especially not being used to driving on the left. But after some 5 kilometres we got the hang of it and even managed to stay on the left with no other cars or lorries showing us the way.

Campingplatz in KillarneyTwo hours later and a lot more tired we arrived in Killarney and looked for a campground. Even in high season it is not too difficult to find a place for a tent and two bikes on any campground. We decided on a nice spot just 2 kilometres outside Killarney's town centre for IrP 5 / night. After having set up the tent we went for our first pub crawl, but it was a short one. We were tired and went to bed - i.e. sleeping bag - early.
