Glenbeigh - Cahersiveen

4th Day:

Bike Tour from Glenbeigh to Cahersiveen (Ring of Kerry)

Campingplatz in GlenbeighEarly in the morning of our 4th day it was so noisy on the campground that we realized that something had changed. And really the rain had stopped so that everywhere around us people were packing and leaving. The campground itself already looked like a swamp. There were deep tracks of tyres of the campers that had almost got stuck in the mud. We were also infected by the motion and packed our bikes. The destination of the day was Cahersiveen.
Strand von Ross-BehyInspired by the good weather we decided not to take the direct way to the Ring of Kerry but to quickly cycle to the beach. White Strand in Ross-Behy (near Glenbeigh) is a popular beach with the Irish. However with 15 degrees Centrigrade there was nobody in the water that day. Thus we were almost on our own and were enjoying the quietness. After this short break we started to return to the Ring of Kerry. The path led us over a short but very steep hill, past a couple of farmsteads and finally back onto the main road.
Auf dem Ring of Kerry zwischen Glenbeigh und CahersiveenThe Ring of Kerry between Glenbeigh and Cahersiveen runs only little time close to the sea. But the road is lined with wild fuchsias and winds around a few mountains. Along the way there are hardly any villages and it is quite lonely, without taking the other tourists into account. Cahersiveen is a somewhat bigger village with a pittoresque centre. Here, the Valencia River flows into the sea and we decided for a campground directly on the river banks (Mannix Point.)
Landschaft bei CahersiveenWe walked around for some time and asked the owner of the campground for addresses of restaurants. He recommended a small restaurant nearby where you can get fresh and very good fish at all times. We went there as he had told us and relished a wonderful dinner at Reenard Point. We had a table with a view onto Valencia Island, which could be reached by ferry (passengers only - no cars).
It is said to be a beautiful island, but we decided against a visit since it seemed to take too much time and because the last ferry returns very early in the evening.
After the dinner we looked for a comfortable pub in Cahersiveen instead. We took some pictures of old ruins, churches and other sights and enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere near our tent directly on the shore of Valencia River.
