Waterville - Kenmare

7th Day:

Bike tour Waterville - Kenmare

Landschaft bei CaherdanielAfter the relaxing day on the Skellig islands we started early today, in order to make the 80 kilometres to Kenmare in one go. We had a big and a small pass in front of us and also a beautiful road winding along Kenmare River. The ascent of Coomakesta Pass begins shortly behind Waterville. When the weather is nice, you can see for miles across Ballinskelligs Bay and Kenmare River. Unfortunately, we were not as lucky, since we were immersed in clouds and could see only for approx. 200 metres.
SneemOn the way to Kenmare you pass Caherdaniel. It is a pittoresque fishing village with a national park (Derrynane National Historic Park).

Half way to Kenmare there is Sneem, a village with many artists. You can see the artistic touch when you look at the colourful houses, artists' shops, painters, potteries, etc.

Marktstände abbauen in KenmareKenmare is an Irish town with some possibilities to go shopping. We were able to buy food and beverages cheaper in supermarkets instead of small shops-around-the-corner. Here, we found maps for the next parts of our tour and went window-shopping a little bit. and we treated us to a bed with a matress - however without breakfast due to the booking situation. In summer, all B&Bs close to the town centres are booked ahead for months.
And we really did not want to cycle some 10 kms in the evening just to get from the town to any B&B. There is not much to see or do in Kenmare, so we ended our day with the usual evening programme: good "craic" in a pub with Irish people and/or other tourists.
