Once upon a time (in spring '97) lived Thomas and Katja in Germany. They wanted to tour Ireland with their bikes for two weeks. After thinking about it for some time they came to the conclusion that the date of the trip would be the first two weeks in August.
Thus, they bought waterproof bags for their bikes (advice: you should really spend that little more money to get really waterproof material, if you want to go to Ireland!!), they packed their tent and sleeping bags and made for the travel agency to find a suitable flight. This proved to be more difficult than expected. But in the end, they decided that Farranfore (i.e. Kerry airport) was more conveniently situated for the Ring of Kerry than Shannon airport and so the flight was booked.
They grabbed a bunch of good bicycle/hiking maps (Ordnance Survey of Ireland, Discovery Series, 1:50 000 - less expensive if bought in Ireland in bigger towns - ), packed warm clothes and waterproofs, and wrapped their bikes into styrofoam for the flight.
Maybe they would have been better off had they trained their condition for the numerous hills and mountain passes in Kerry. But it was too late for that now.
