Landkarte Killarney

14th Day:

Bus ride from Cork to Killarney

Early in the morning we packed our bags onto the bikes, said goodbye to our b&b landlady and rode to the bus terminal in Cork. We were lucky and were allowed to take both our bikes on the first bus to Killarney, just as planned. The bus ride was easy, nothing happened and even the landscape does not appear as spectacular any more when you see it for the second time in only a few days.
überfüllte Strasse in KillarneyWhen we arrived in Killarney we went straight to the campground where we had spent our first night. We had left all the packaging for our bikes there and took it now back. Nothing was missing, but we did not want to pack the bikes just yet and did not want to think about going home yet. So we put up our tent and went to explore the surroundings again.
Ross Castle and Lough Leane
We wanted to see a little of the „lakes region“ around Killarney and left the town due south. Soon we tried to work our way through small paths to Lough Leane. But we found out that most of the paths are dead ends, so we had to take the “normal” road. But even that has a pretty sight upon the landscape around Killarney.
See bei Killarney (Lough Leane)We quickly came upon the roadsigns to Ross Castle and followed them. Ross Castle is the ruin of a castle that is restored at the moment. We did not go inside but enjoyed the lake instead. It is very pretty, you can rent rowing boats or take the tourist boat to one of the islands to have a look around. We went for the third choice and explored the paths around it – with offroad bikes no problem.
We soon felt like the last humans on earth, which we did not think possible some minutes before. In Ireland it is so easy to find quiet peaceful places for oneself even in high season. This ended our day peacefully on Lough Leane and we only went back to Killarney when we started to get hungry and thirsty and we also were in dager of being eaten alive by all the midgies around us.

Guinness-LKW vor einem Pub in KillarneyWe treated ourselves to a dinner in one of the many restaurants of Killarney to enjoy the end of the holiday. Afterwards we were looking for a quiet pub, which was not easy. Killarney is hosting so many tourists that there is live music in every pub. And the marketing of the Ring of Kerry is pushed so much that Killarney really bursts with people in August.
We gave up our search after three unsuccessful attempts to get a seat in a pub where you could still hold a conversation without yelling louder than the music. We still enjoyed our last hours of holiday in a huge pub that was at least not overcrowded and listened more than we talked. We went back to our campground fairly early.
